Public Art Exploration

2019

Partner: Zhuoyan Xie

We explored different possibilities of public engagement in the physical surroundings through user testing. Public art pieces are usually produced based on the artists’ own intention and understanding without much input from the
public. We explored an alternative process of generating public art using design thinking: using insights from each user testing to develop the next prototypes.

The initial idea started with using perspective to alter the current views of the city. This method adds an extra layer to what we see and unsee, disrupting existing framing in the landscape and creating new interactions and experiences in the public space.

Prototype 1
Free moving frames

Observation and Insights:
The frame aspect should be
presented more clearly.

Prototype 2
Rotating frame with a handle

Observation and Insights:
People are treating the structure as an interactive sculpture. The structure can be more playful.

Prototype 3
Flexible metal cube. Each side has a different color to indicate the completion of a rectangle.

Observation:
The original framing idea is translated into the playful interaction approach.
